Memorial Day Events in California

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May each year, is first and foremost a day to honor the proud men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. For many families, it is also a three-day weekend; one that signals the start of summer. If you still need plans, there are lots of Memorial Day events and family-friendly festivals happening throughout Sunny California this weekend, so mark your calendars and set your GPS. Veterans Wreath Remembrance Ceremony

When: Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM

Where: USS Midway Museum

What: Join USS Midway during Legacy Week for an hour-long Veteran’s Wreath Remembrance Ceremony. This free public event will feature a flyover, the live sounds of taps, and the tossing of biodegradable wreaths over the ship. Retired Veterans and Heroes will also be in attendance. USS Midway Museum offers more than sixty carefully restored exhibit areas from the engine room to the flight deck for families to explore.

Vista Strawberry Festival

When: Sunday, May 27, 2018 from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Where: 127 Main St.

Vista, CA 92084

What: Head to Vista for their annual strawberry festival; the only festival of its kind. There will be live entertainment on multiple stages, carnival rides, fun contests, and strawberry runs. Runs include a 10K, a 5K, a 1-mile Kids’ Run, and a ¼ Mile Tots Trot. Additionally, you’ll find over 400 vendors featuring strawberry desserts, jams, as well as arts and crafts from local artists.

The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park

When: Every Tuesday – Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Where: 2115 Park Boulevard

What: The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park houses a unique collection of artifacts, memorabilia, artwork, and flags as well as a Military History Reference library holding more than eleven thousand volumes. The museum and its contents are dedicated to a variety of combats both at home and abroad from all branches of service. Contact the museum for special events and living history tour information.

Desert Discovery Family Day

When: Monday, May 28, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Where: San Diego Natural History Museum

What: According to their website: “Far from deserted, our deserts are full of plant and animal life. From bees, to bighorn sheep and blooming cacti, see how plants and animals adapt to the heat.” Crafts and activities will be provided. Admission to Desert Discovery Family Day is included in general museum admission price.
